A Note On Loneliness

Loneliness is a tricky feeling. We can be surrounded by people in a room and still feel lonely even though its past definitions have been generally about the feelings we feel when we are alone too much. Science and psychology have been delving deeper into this feeling in recent years and are finding loneliness is much more than a lack of social life.

2020 was a year of isolation, loss, and change for many of us and if loneliness has crept into your life, know that it is ok and a part of the human condition no matter what your life circumstances are. Here are a few suggestions to help you connect to your loneliness:

Create an intention to receive & note energy in small places- If someone smiles and nods at you in the street as they walk by, cherish it, the smile is energy for you :) If a dog tugs on his leash so he can come over to you, that friendly energy is for you. If you get a quick check-in text from someone, you're on their mind at that moment, that caring energy is for you. Let these small things start to fill your inner energy cup.

Notice social routine- You would be surprised at how much the routine social interactions with people you barely know can help you feel community. Whether it's your local coffee barista or the post office clerk or the old couple on the park bench you walk by every day, even if you say the same 2 sentences to them when you see them and they respond with the same answers, they are your people! Try noticing all these little interactions more and find value in someone that has memorized your coffee preference etc.

Tap into nature- Nature is alive, buzzing with energy, and connected to everything. It's the middle of winter though so, a lot of us aren't spending as much time outside. I always say, if you feel totally alone or hopeless, get a houseplant... Sounds like a hippy rabbit hole but, it is scientifically proven that they clean the air in your room, they are alive with root systems much like our central nervous systems, they omit energy, and they do respond to their surroundings. They connect with everything so why not connect with you?! Take some time with your plant and while tending to it, chat about stuff that's on your mind :) Have your morning coffee with it, say good night to it. Think of your houseplant as a very low maintenance dog or cat!
